So, what is Inkscape?

Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics program with similar capabilities as Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw and Xara. Although somewhat less powerful compared to some of the paid software out there, Inkscape has a plethora of features with a simple, clean and easy to understand UI. Go give it a try, you won't regret it!

My article "A Crash Course in Inkscape" has just been updated with some minor corrections and suggestions from Alexandre Prokoudine of Libre Graphics World [link]. (The shameful thing was that his email was buried under a pile of spam.)

This is geared towards Inkscape newbies and those curious about the open-source vector program. The goal is to quickly get new users up and running in Inkscape. I cover all of the basics and then some.

Also I was told by Prokoudine that Inkscape could export to Gimp's XCF format. So far In Mac, Windows, and Fedora, my copies of Inkscape are missing that option. If you know of an easy (it doesn't have to be easy) way to enable Inkscape's ability to export to XCF, send me a message or a link.

I have been using the exported bitmap to upload to Deviantart, but is the raw SVG file type supported yet so i can share it for others to download?

Hey!

Though dA won't display the svg directly, you can post the bitmap image with the source file as a download.

Submit art > 'Choose a file to upload' (select the svg) > click edit icon in top right corner of box > click 'change preview file' and select the bitmap file you'd normally upload as a standalone.

sometimes i can find tuts in text and video, but not this one and its really cool! i don't know all of the shortcuts and lingo used so its kinda hard to follow

Are you talking of the "Inkscape failed to load requested file" error? If so, it either means the file is corrupt or Inkscape doesn't support the file type (or the coding it uses). There's not all that much you can do about it unfortunately. :shrug:

I have a weird question, but I already created a mermaid in Inkscape, but for the life of me, can't get it to upload, or share it on other sites as well. I dont think its as a Jpeg....how do I change the format to fix it??? can you send me a link???

At least as of the latest inkscape build, (0.48?, there's an export feature :)


  1. Go to file -> Export to bitmap

  2. Hit 'browse' and locate where you want to save it, and what fileformat in the dropdown

  3. Hit 'Export'

  4. Win!

you can open in GIMP and exported from there to PNG or JPEG. Maybe you can export to PNG/JPEG in inkscape too (i don't know). Now it is a SVG file (a text file that have all the information about colour inside and work with vectors).
